School pupils can receive help with travel costs to and from school. As a young person you may also be able to take advantage of the following:
Half price travel on local buses if you are under 16.
Bus pass or travel card, depending on the scheme operated by your local bus company for those over the age of 16.
The Young Persons Coachcard is available from National Express. It costs £12.50 for one year or £30 for three years (plus £2.20 p&p) and enables you to get up to 30% off the price of a coach ticket.
The Young Persons Railcard is available to help you receive discounts on rail travel. It costs £30 for a one-year card and £70 for a three-year card and is available for people aged 16-25.
Zip Oyster photocards enable young people aged 11-15 to get free travel on buses and trams and child fares on tube and some rail services. They also enable people aged 16-18 to obtain cheaper travel.
If you are not a full-time student you can apply for an International Youth Travel Card. This enables you to receive the same discounts and benefits as an International Student Identity Card. To be eligible for this card you need to be under the age of 26. The card is valid for 12 months and costs around £12.
If you are a student other discount schemes are available to help you to save money. Also, you may be able to receive discounts in cinemas, theatres, sports centres and some shops if you are able to provide proof of your age. When applying for a proof of age card, make sure that it contains the Proof of Age Standards (PASS) logo.
