Child Benefit

If you have children you can claim a weekly sum of money to help you meet the costs of raising a child
What is Child Benefit?

Child Benefit is a weekly payment made to parents or guardians who are responsible for a child or children. The payment is tax-free and is usually paid every four weeks straight into your bank account. It is possible to receive payments on a weekly basis if you are claiming certain benefits such as Income Support or Jobseeker's Allowance, or if you are a single parent.

Who qualifies for Child Benefit?

Any parent or guardian who is responsible for looking after a child can claim Child Benefit (if two parents are responsible, only one can claim).

How much is Child Benefit?

Child Benefit is paid in two amounts. You will receive £20.70 a week for your eldest or only child and £13.70 for each subsequent child.

How do I claim Child Benefit?

You will need to obtain a Child Benefit claim form, which you fill in and send to the Child Benefit Office along with your child's birth or adoption certificate. New mothers are given this form in hospital or you can obtain a form from the HM Revenue and Customs website.

Where can I find more information about Child Benefit?

More information about Child Benefit can be obtained from the Government information website. You may also be interested in finding out about tax credit payments for children and investing money for your children.
