Advanced Learner Loan

What is the Advanced Learner Loan scheme?

This scheme has been set up to help adults in England who are aged 19 or over pay for the cost of a course at Levels 3, 4, 5 or 6. Loans are available for full-time and part-time study.

How much money can I get through the Advanced Learner Loan scheme?

The amount of loan that you can get depends on the type of course, the course fees and the maximum loan that is available for your course. The minimum loan amount that you can apply for is £300. The money is paid direct to your college or training provider.

How do I repay the loan?

Your monthly repayment amount will be 9% of any income you earn over £25,725. However, you will not need to make any repayments if you earn less than £25,725 per year. Your employer will work out your repayments and take them out of your salary with your tax.

What are the eligibility criteria for an Advanced Learner Loan?

You must meet the following criteria to be eligible to apply for the loan:

  • You must be 19 or older on the first day of your course.
  • You must be studying on a qualifying course that leads to a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification.
  • You must be studying at a college or training provider in England approved for public funding.
  • You must meet the residency criteria (if you do not meet this criteria, visit Refugee Study for information about free courses).
